Grant Application for
Crooked Tree Arts Center

Mission Statement:
The Crooked Tree Arts Center (CTAC)—with locations in Petoskey and Traverse City—has the mission of inspiring and enriching lives through the arts. Serving the community for over 50 years the community center provides arts programming for all ages to learn, engage, explore, critique, discuss, and discover. CTAC advances its mission through rotating exhibits, performances, lectures, classes, workshops, summer art camps, film screenings, and festivals to over 250,000 residents throughout northwest lower Michigan. Specifically, CTAC’s School of Ballet classes for children and young adults is a cornerstone of arts education programming and is the only non-profit charitable fine art dance program in Emmet County. As with all the arts programs offered by CTAC, the dance program fulfills a great need in Emmet County where minimal arts programs are available. The population of northern Michigan relies on CTAC to provide high quality arts experiences a community needs to grow and prosper.

Project Description:
CTAC seeks funds to support a 2 week artist-in-residence with screendance pioneer and U of M Professor Emeritus of Dance, Peter Sparling. A graduate of Interlochen and The Julliard School, Sparling danced with the companies of José Limón and Martha Graham and directed Peter Sparling Dance Company. His videos have been screened globally. He is a published poet and has shown his paintings in three solo exhibits. Sparling’s residency will bring his Motion Pictures Project to CTAC. MPP is a multi-faceted, interdisciplinary approach to the visual arts combining contemporary dance, video editing/projection and painting. Under Sparling’s direction, dancers will explore motion through the creation of solo and ensemble works to be videotaped in the studio against a greenscreen and outdoors. Students will edit their recordings to create synchronized “paintings” and time-lapsed animations. The resulting video will be projected in front of dancers in a live performance presented to the community.
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
18
What percentage are female?
85
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
While the School of Ballet offers instruction to both girls and boys, by nature, the target audience for the ballet program is girls ages 4 to 18. In fact, in a typical year, it is necessary to recruit two to four male students to train alongside female dancers and fulfill roles in productions.
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
Annually, CTAC provides dance instruction to nearly 100 children and young adults in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties. Beginner and intermediate dance classes provide open enrollment, high quality instruction with at least two opportunities for students to perform. Our nationally known Pre-Professional Program, by audition only, requires a dedication to ballet and offers a challenging curriculum.
In an effort to create an accessible and affordable program, CTAC offers half price tuition for each class beyond the first class each semester to all School of Ballet students. CTAC also offers $55,000 annually in needs-based scholarships across our programs, including up to 95% tuition assistance for dance instruction. Approximately 40% of our dance students receive tuition assistance and all pre-professional dancers receive financial support for summer programs. Of the dancers receiving tuition assistance, more than half have an adjusted household income of less than $30,000.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
Artist-in-residence (AIR) workshops provide dancers with a taste of professional dance life. Exposure to training from dance luminaries is essential for maximizing the potential of dancers and broadens access to diverse arts experiences for our community. The AIR with Peter Sparling will provide CTAC School of Ballet students a unique opportunity to expand their creative expression through an experimental approach to movement and advance their experience and study of screendance. Through this exposure, students will attain a greater understanding of potential career paths in film, technology, and dance; increased opportunity in the workforce; and a developed appreciation for this quickly growing artform. Most significantly, the AIR will introduce and give girls and young women a significant head start toward potential career paths that are otherwise introduced at the college level including, filming, video and sound editing, marketing, composition, content, communication, and choreography. The AIR will promote economic self-sufficiency and well being for women and girls by giving them unparalleled access to a renowned dancer and confidence to explore creative and technical career opportunities.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
The success of the program will be measured by:
-Program enrollment and tuition revenue.
-Program engagement through viewership/ticket sales.
-Student and viewer surveys and feedback.
-Student outcomes, including acceptance into collegiate-level dance programs and employment in technology related fields.
