Project Description:

Good Hart Artist Residency (GHAR) is hosting writer Karolina Letunova for a stay, October 7-21, 2023. The residency provides artists with the time and space for creative work in a supportive and nurturing environment. While she is in residency, Karolina will be supported by an additional stipend to help with childcare at her home base. During her residency, Karolina has proposed a writing workshop titled Writing the Female Experience. In the description for the workshop she writes, “let’s locate our rage, our disappointment, our hope.” Women finding and using their voices is a key ingredient in the struggle for equity and wellness. We are collaborating with the Women’s Resource Center of Northern Michigan and the Petoskey District Library for this event. The free workshop will be held at the library and is open to the public. All partner organizations will promote the event to their audiences.

Goal of the Project

How many people will you reach?

20

What percentage are female?

100

If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?

More details on questions above:
How many people will you reach?
GHAR will provide an artist’s residency for one female writer and care for her children at their home.
The resident artist will conduct a public workshop for up to 20 women.

What percentage are female?
100% The writer-in-residence, Karolina, and the workshop participants will all identify as female.

The requested funds will support the residency opportunity for Karolina and the writing workshop for women. In general, GHAR programming supports male, female, non-binary, and individuals preferring not to describe. This particular residency and workshop is designed specifically for women. It is unusual for an artist residency to provide support for childcare at home. This additional stipend addresses an important need, allowing a woman artist to have time and space for creative work.

How are recipients identified or selected to receive services?  Is financial need considered?

The writing workshop will be free and open to the public, and writing supplies will be provided making the event financially accessible to participants.

We strive to bring a diversity of arts/artists to GHAR. Residents are selected through a highly competitive, online, jury process. Our jurors and staff are trained to consider implicit bias, as well as diversity, equity and inclusion, as program goals. There is a $25 fee to apply to the program, though we take financial need into consideration by waiving the fee upon request. Financial support is also provided through stipends. The resident is provided with full room and board, and a $500 stipend upon completion of the residency. If the resident is a parent-artist, they are eligible to be considered for an additional $1,000, to help with childcare needs at their home base while in residence. This additional stipend helps to support parent-artists who find doing artistic work while actively parenting to be extremely difficult.

What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?

GHAR will fully support the writer Karolina Letunova for a residency so she can complete a novel that is currently in progress. Artists benefit by time away from normal routines and demands to focus on their work. Karolina’s proposed workshop with the Women’s Resource Center and Petoskey District Library will encourage women to find their voices and express themselves through writing. Research shows that identifying and writing about feelings can improve both mental and physical health (PositivePsychology.com/benefits-of-journaling). A counselor will be on-site for emotional support if needed. The promotion of this workshop by all three organizations will make a powerful public statement on the importance of giving women a safe opportunity for self-expression. Providing Karolina a place and solitude for writing, along with her writing workshop, will enhance the lives of all the women involved.

How will you evaluate or measure your success:

We routinely request evaluations from partnering organizations after every collaborative event. Residents are also asked to fill out an evaluation at the completion of their stay at GHAR. This information is gathered using Google Forms and provides valuable feedback that is used when planning programming. Staff will be involved at all stages of event planning and will attend the event to facilitate and gauge impact.
