Project Name:
Toiletries & Shoes for Pellston MS & HS Girls
Project start and end dates:
September 8, 2023
May 31, 2024
Amount Requested:
$
4000
Project Description:
Over 65 middle & high school girls visit Pellston's Hornets' Nest Youth Pantry each Friday. We want to provide more options for these girls with more shampoos, body wash, combs, deodorants, toothpaste, lotion, toothbrushes, & personal hygiene products. There are 149 Pellston students (girls & boys) eligible for Free Lunch, with over 110 visiting each Friday. That accounts for 62% of the total MS/HS student population being economically disadvantaged. With so many students needing food and the cost of groceries so high, the food budget does not allow us to buy the number of toiletries needed or to provide girls who need new shoes. Each week Pellston's pantry shelves are bare! We stock over $1,000 worth of food each week at the Hornet's Nest - that's approximately $36,000 - $40,000 for the school year. We could buy $125 each week of needed toiletries & one pair of sneakers for these most deserving girls self-confidence with your help.
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
65
What percentage are female?
100
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
The products we buy will be toiletries and shoes designated for females. Any girls we buy shoes for will be measured and asked what type of shoes they need, want, and like - dress shoes or sneakers. Making these simple decisions empowers young people (or anyone) to know they alone can make a difference in their life - present and future.
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
All the girls visiting the Hornet's Nest Youth Pantry weekly are eligible for Free Lunch or Reduced Cost Lunch. Pellston MS & HS student population has 240 students with 149 Eligible Free Lunch, 0 Eligible for Reduced Cost Lunch, and 91 not economically disadvantaged. That's 62% are economically disadvantaged. We have Pellston's counselor or Department of Health's nurse check our registration pages periodically to see if they notice names who should not be using the pantry. So far they have not seen any economically advantaged student abusing the pantry by taking food or toiletries from it.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
Middle & High School girl's self-esteem is more vulnerable as they become aware of how they compare to their peers. They also are more likely to tie self-worth to cues such as personal hygiene, brand names on goods, and clean and adequately fitted clothing such as shoes.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
We know it's a success when we see all the shelves bare at the end of 1.5 hours of shopping each Friday, we realize we could have had even more items if possible. However, the number of times we hear Thank You from these young people as they walk out the door with 1, 2, or 3 bags of food makes your heart soar! Last week (April 28) when volunteering at the Hornet's Nest, one young boy who took three cans of Corned Beef Hash for his family's Sunday breakfast told me as he was leaving, "Thanks for doing this, it makes my life better." I asked him if they put an egg on each serving, he replied, "Yep, my Grandma's chickens" with a big proud smile.
