Project Description:
During “Healing with the Earth: A Five Month Journey Through Grief to Joy for Women,” a small group (6-8) of women will practice being present with and honoring themselves, each other and the environment. We will practice being present with our embodied trauma or the experiences of disconnection that we carry within our bodies as we move with and through our grief with the support of the Earth step by step. This five month healing journey will include meeting one Saturday a month for five hours. This group will learn about and practice moving through the Grief Wheel in both somatic meditation practices and in a physical representation of the Grief Wheel that is a physical garden in Petoskey, MI. The Grief Wheel is a practice of moving through stages of grief inspired by Tibetan Buddhism and informed by somatic embodiment techniques that focus on the internal awareness of sensations and movement in the body and that allow the body to release held tensions to find greater balance.

If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?

How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
Recipients will fill out a brief application form to be considered for participation in the program and will be selected on the basis of their interest, their experience and their ability to be committed to the five months. If they are requesting a scholarship, they will answer a couple more questions to determine their need and how they plan to incorporate these practices into their lives moving forward. Those who have the greatest financial need and interest in using the skills for their personal healing and growth as well as possibly some interest in ongoing studies in similar realms of practice will be prioritized to receive the scholarships.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
The goal for this program is to cultivate a nurturing, intimate community space for women who are longing to feel more resourced, nourished and connected in their relationship with themselves, the natural environment and in their relationships with others so they can take the risk to heal through their grief together. This program will provide these women the perspective, practices, tools and resources that can inspire and support them to continue to heal through their grief, which is both individual and collective, and to feel a greater sense of belonging with other women who are seeking a similar experience. Learning and practicing this kind of healing can offer women the opportunity to expand their understanding of what is possible for themselves. It can also help them to feel how they are a part of a vast web of life and to rest into greater trust, resiliency and support at challenging times so that they can ultimately be of greater service to others longer term, which can benefit one's economic self-sufficiency and personal well-being. Past participants in previous offerings have felt and experienced more of who they have always been opening up new creative possibilities in their lives with greater joy and curiosity.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
Each participant will be asked to provide feedback on her experience one week after each month’s gathering as well as at the end of the five months. I will use the feedback to make adjustments to support the needs of the participants for the following gatherings. Questions will ask how the participants are using the practices for their personal healing between sessions, as well as what changes they are noticing in their personal process. Participants will have an optional individual mid-month 30-minute phone or zoom check-in with Hilary to support their journey if they so choose. Success will be determined by how well participants are able to bring the lessons and practices that are shared into their lives to help cope with the challenging dynamics that they face on a regular basis.
