Mission Statement:

The Crooked Tree Arts Center (CTAC)—with locations in Petoskey and Traverse City—has the mission of inspiring and enriching lives through the arts. Serving the community for over 50 years the community center provides arts programming for all ages to learn, engage, explore, critique, discuss, and discover. CTAC advances its mission through rotating exhibits, performances, lectures, classes, workshops, summer art camps, film screenings, and festivals to over 250,000 residents throughout northwest lower Michigan. Specifically, CTAC’s School of Ballet classes for children and young adults is a cornerstone of arts education programming and is the only non-profit charitable fine art dance program in Emmet County. As with all the arts programs offered by CTAC, the dance program fulfills a great need in Emmet County where minimal arts programs are available. The population of northern Michigan relies on CTAC to provide high quality arts experiences a community needs to grow and prosper.

Project Description:

CTAC School of Ballet seeks funds to support a 2 week artist-in-residence with dancers from Sacramento Ballet, Ava Catterson and Julia Feldman.

Chatterson has been dancing with the Sacramento Ballet since 2010 and is on the faculty of the School of Sacramento Ballet. Feldman has created new work for the Sacramento Ballet company since 2012 and has also choreographed for the School of the Sacramento Ballet. Jointly, they are founders of Capital Dance Project in Sacramento.

Feldman created a new work on the CTAC ballet students for the annual Fall for Dance performance last year, challenging the students to explore a new range of motion within the technique of ballet.

Chatterson and Feldman will be creating an experience for the students to develop their artistry and refine technique. Chatterson, through master classes and contemporary ballet repertoire, and Feldman, through composition and the development of a new work to be performed at Fall for Dance 2023.

Goal of the Project

How many people will you reach?

200

What percentage are female?

98

If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?

While the School of Ballet offers instruction to both girls and boys, by nature, the audience for the ballet program is primarily girls ages 4 to 18. In fact, in a typical year, it is necessary to recruit two to four male students to train alongside female dancers and fulfill roles in productions.

The artist-in-residence (AIR) with Chatterson and Feldman will provide CTAC School of Ballet students a unique opportunity to expand their creative expression through contemporary ballet and a resource to understand the value of a career in dance. Chatterson and Feldmen are role models for our young women who aspire to pursue dance professionally. Hosting them to rehearse with and teach our students allows our young women to realize their full potential as professional dance artists.

How are recipients identified or selected to receive services?  Is financial need considered?

Annually, CTAC provides dance instruction to nearly 200 children and young adults in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties. Beginner and intermediate dance classes provide open enrollment, high quality instruction with at least two opportunities for students to perform. Our nationally known Pre-Professional Program, by audition only, requires a dedication to ballet and offers a challenging curriculum.

In an effort to create an accessible and affordable program, CTAC offers half price tuition for each class beyond the first class each semester to all School of Ballet students. CTAC also offers $50,000 annually in needs and merit based scholarships across our programs, including up to 95% tuition assistance for dance instruction. Approximately 40% of our dance students receive tuition assistance and all pre-professional dancers receive financial support for summer programs. Of the dancers receiving tuition assistance, more than half have an adjusted household income of less than $30,000.

What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?

Artist-in-residence (AIR) workshops provide dancers with a taste of professional dance life. Exposure to training from dance luminaries is essential for maximizing the potential of dancers and broadens access to diverse arts experiences for our community. Through this exposure, students will attain a greater understanding of potential career paths in dance, increased opportunity in the workforce and a developed appreciation for this quickly growing artform. Most significantly, the AIR will introduce and give girls and young women a significant head start toward potential career paths that are otherwise introduced at the college level including composition, communication and choreography. The AIR will promote economic self-sufficiency and well being for women and girls by giving them unparalleled access to renowned dancers and confidence to explore creative and technical career opportunities.

How will you evaluate or measure your success:

The success of the program will be measured by:
-Program enrollment and tuition revenue.
-Program engagement through viewership/ticket sales.
-Student and viewer surveys and feedback.
-Student outcomes, including acceptance into collegiate-level dance programs and professional companies.
