Project Description:

This week long summer camp experience places the girls into new diverse adventures where they can learn new outdoor skills such as archery, canoeing, climbing, reptile study, plant identification, welding, camping, cooking and so much more. The troop works as a team lead by elected youth members and advised by the Scoutmaster and camp staff. In addition to working on merit badges the girls will have team challenges that will grow their team work and leadership skills. The girls will have access to science, technology, engineering, nature, outdoors and adventure opportunities that they cannot access in any other setting.

Goal of the Project

How many people will you reach?

12

What percentage are female?

100

If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?

NA

How are recipients identified or selected to receive services?  Is financial need considered?

The grant will be dispersed across those who express financial hardship and need in order to attend summer camp with the troop. Many of the members are from low income families and without the grant will not be able to attend.

What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?

I plan to develop leadership qualities in these girls. Through the unique setting of the camp I will provide new challenging and exciting educational experiences in areas that are less open to Women. This week will develop new friendships, new skills, and open up areas often out of reach to Young Women. Out door skills, science and engineering are often closed to girls. Scouts BSA summer camp levels the playing field for the girls who attend. This is a unique program that Hestia can support the first and only Scouts BSA troop for girls in Northern Michigan. Scouts BSA has historically been only available to boys and now girls have the same opportunity to become uniquely prepared for their future.

How will you evaluate or measure your success:

Scouts BSA has a built in process to review the program and the Scout master at every rank advancement of each scout. We hold a board of review comprised of community leaders who are knowledgable of the program. The Scout is asked questions about their experience and journey. The Scout master is not present so it is unbiased. The Board then makes suggestions to improve the program implementation as needed.
