Project Description:
After one of our most successful years of operating Girls Golf, we are reinventing the program. Last year, we set a capacity of 24 girls for participation in a 12-session program. The last two to sign up were sisters when there was only 1 spot left. We were able to allow both to get into the program so we ran last year slightly above capacity at 25 young ladies. In 2024, we are running two 8-session programs throughout the summer which will allow up to 48 girls to participate in the program. In addition to having an impact on these girls golf games, we also have the opportunity to impact their development into women. Our program not only teaches the game of golf but also several key commitments that translate into real life. These key commitments include collaborating with others, pursuing goals, growing through challenge, building a positive identity and using good judgement. Several past Gilrs Golf graduates have now become part of our all female coaching staff.

This program is only for young ladies.
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
The enrollment for the program is open to all who wish to participate. Every young lady that signs up has the option of financial assistance up to 100% of the cost. We will see over 6000 boys and girls in gym classes this winter leading up to the delivery of this program and mention Girls Golf to all of the young ladies that participate in the gym classes.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
The game of golf is uniquely situated to teach life skills and we use that in all of our programs. In Girls Golf, however, we are fortunate to have amazing coaches that live the First Tee Core Values and set a wonderful example for the young girls that will participate in our program. One coach in particular, Laura Pawlick, participated in the Girls Golf program as a youngster. She graduated from Petoskey in 2022 and is now a sophomore studying Psychology at Michigan State University. Laura has an amazing ability to connect with the girls on their level and show them what a responsible young woman looks like. Laura's organizational skills and ability to present subject matter to the girls has many of them emulating her mannerisms which will help them achieve success in the future. Another coach is Onika Alonzi who is a Senior at Harbor Springs High School. Onika is extremely active in SAFE in Northern Michigan and has an amazing work ethic that will resonate with the girls in our program. Each of these young coaches have shown amazing self-sufficiency as Laura is probably my most reliable coach on staff and Onika works multiple jobs to insure for future success as she looks forward to going to college next year.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
We are excited about being able to offer this program to more girls with our expansion into 2 programs. Filling the program will certainly be one way we'll measure success. Quite possibly the biggest measure of success is developing young ladies like Laura and Onika. Our goal is to have many more junior coaches that we can trust to instill life changing values in the young ladies in our area for years to come.
