Project Description:
Room 156 is our in school pantry/resource center within Boyne City Public Schools. We provide food, clothing, personal hygiene products and winter gear to any 5-12th grade student in need. Each week we see roughly 150 students who bring home food and needs for their time away from school. One of our biggest needs in Room 156 is feminine hygiene products. These are a basic need the can be very costly for some families. We have an area of the room that is designated to our young ladies only. It includes pads, tampons, leggings and more to help with any surprise that may pop up. We encourage our young ladies to take home enough for holidays, breaks from school, and to have on hand for when they might need it. We would like to stock up and be able to supply not only our resource center, but or female bathrooms with supplies so every young lady of BCPS feels secure while they are in school.
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
500
What percentage are female?
500
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
NA
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
Any student is welcome to visit Room156, no matter what their situation. Majority of our visitors though are students who qualify for free, or free and reduced lunch from school and have voiced a need for additional help. We set up our women's area to support any young lady who visits the space and a lot of times this need can be an emergency and parents cant always leave work to provide a quick fix. We have everything they would need! Any young woman would be a part of this project.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
I would like to make sure a woman's period is not a reason to stay home from school, or be embarrassed to carry what products you need down the hallway. I want to see all of our young ladies be confidant that what they need is already in the bathroom for them and they know Room156 has plenty to take home for time away from school. I hope this would make an impact to the families of our community who could use the help with a necessity that can be costly.
If we received this grant Hestia would be helping to support a movement to empower our next generation to embrace who they are. This project fits perfectly with your mission statement to care for the well being of women and girls.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
Room 156 would plan to purchase as many pads, tampons and such products as the grant would allow and use it to keep bathrooms and resource center stocked. We would monitor the need and adjust accordingly. We hope positive feedback and products being used would build the confidence of the ladies in our school.
