Project Description:
Great Lakes Youth Choirs of Voices Without Borders is seeking grant money to assist in helping singers with tuition costs for the choir program through scholarships. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, choir numbers have dropped, our hope is to increase the number of singers in our choirs. Our local choirs are still participating but with less singers. We want all interested youth singers to have the opportunity to sing in our choir. Being able to offer scholarships would allow us to do this. We have put hosting the international festival on hold at this time due to low choir member numbers. Our hope is grow our choirs to benefit singers and community through the preforming arts and with larger choirs be able to again host an international festival in the upcoming years. The benefits of biennial international festivals are incredible for the singers of northern Michigan, the Emmet county community, and international guest singers.

GLYC of VWB serve both males and females. Currently 90% of our choir members are female.
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
All singers receive the Scholarship Request Form in their Welcome Packet and the process for scholarship request is explained to all parents. Once the scholarship request has been submitted, it is reviewed by the scholarship committee. Financial need for each participant request is evaluated by the scholarship committee. GLYC of VWB would like to be able to award partial tuition scholarships for singers with financial needs.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
The motivation behind the project is to continue to provide a musical and creative outlet for young girls in the community, have a choir that is strong in numbers and be able to host an international festival again in the near future. Research determines that the benefits of singing are huge, including mental, social and physical benefits. The benefits for the community include performing arts concerts to attend. The benefits of the international festivals are huge for local singers, the community and international guest singers, including relationships built, cultural connections and understanding as well as culturally rich performances in our community.
This project would improve the lives of choir singers and their families by being able to participate in the program. It would benefit the community by continuing to provide the performing arts on a local level, as well as including the international performing arts festivals.
There are a range of benefits for singers, such as increased belonging and social bonds, decrease in stress and depression, increase in self confidence and self discipline, all of which lowering potential mental health struggles.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
Success will be determined by the number of singers that participate due to the scholarships GLYC of VWB is able to provide through assistance with tuition.
