Project Description:
This is a continuation of the grant we received in 2023. This grant will support the ongoing bimonthly Lakeshore Writers group that formed out of last year's writing workshop. In this group, local women writers produce creative writing, share it, and connect in community. The group meets at the Petoskey District Library and is led by our Associate Director.
We will also use the funds to support the residency of a songwriter, Jilaine Wheatcroft, from England. In January 2025 she will lead a workshop in which local women will convert their writing to song, opening a new pathway to finding power in words, creativity, and community.
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
35
What percentage are female?
99
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
The program was initially built for women, and is almost entirely women-focused. Because we value inclusion, there is one male member who occasionally attends Lakeshore Writers. The rest (20) are female. The songwriting workshop will be focused on and marketed to women.
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
People can sign up on a first-come, first served basis for the songwriting workshop. All are welcome to the Lakeshore Writers group. All events are free of charge.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
We hope to deepen the community of women writers we've begun to develop by continuing to offer the Lakeshore Writers group. We hope to create the sense that female voices matter both within the writers group and by continuing our programming with the songwriting workshop.
When women and girls see that their voices are valued and welcomed, it's empowering. The writing community we are developing creates a space for women to belong and find connection. This project is directly related to Hestia's mission to create well being for women and girls because it offers two opportunities for women to both express themselves creatively and find community with each other.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
Success will be clear if the writing group is able to continue, and if we are able to support the residency of Jilaine Wheatcroft and bring women to her songwriting workshop in January 2025. Additionally, we will survey the writing group to be sure that it is meeting the needs of the participants. Ms. Wheatcroft will be asked to provide feedback on her residency experience.
