Mission Statement:

We are dedicated to creating a space where young women can develop self-confidence, cultivate a sense of belonging, and foster a deep connection with the natural world that surrounds them. By fostering moments of triumph and self-discovery, we aspire to empower each participant with self confidence that extends beyond our adventures. We see children forging bonds of friendship and belonging that enrich their lives while nurturing a strong sense of community. Our dedication to this vision propels us to be an example of opportunity, growth, and connection for all the young female adventurers we have the privilege to guide.

Project Description:

Last summer we took six of our girls from our school's Outdoor Adventure Club on a fly fishing trip to Beaver Island for 2 days. We had it professionally filmed and turned into a documentary (see youtube link above) to get our story of female empowerment in outdoor sports out there. The film had a sold out premiere at the Lyric in Harbor Springs and has been accepted into multiple film festivals around the state. This ignited a spark in all these girls and they have begged to go on another trip and film it. This summer would like to take them to Thunder Bay, Alpena to snorkel, scuba dive, and learn to spear fish. We need very specific equipment to go on this trip that we currently do not have. The lodging is free and so are the lessons. The girls will be filming this trip themselves and will learn to edit it in their AEVE class at school. This will be a 2 day trip. The Marine Sanctuary up there will be provide us with the space, water, boat tours, and kayaks.

Goal of the Project

How many people will you reach?

10

What percentage are female?

100

If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?

This is a female only excursion.

How are recipients identified or selected to receive services?  Is financial need considered?

We started our Adventure Club about 10 years ago, targeting the age range of 8-12 years old. The students are selected based on interest in the outdoors, teacher recommendations of kids who need some peer support, or kids who do not participate in any other extracurricular programmings. The girls who went on the trip last year and who will attend this year are some of our most dedicated girls who have been with us from the beginning. Some have since aged out of the Club but because of their passion and excitement with the outdoors we are providing them with more advanced excursions in an outdoor setting. They have put in the work and are role models to our younger members. Our club is free to join and we provide them with all the gear they need thanks to generous donors and grants.

What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?

We hope to continue to foster a positive relationship with these girls and the outdoors. Women and girls are severely underrepresented in outdoor sports and activities. Our first film was all about breaking that stereotype. The girls have developed such a passion for these activities and we know they are life long hobbies. We are hoping to expose the girls to as many outdoor sports and adventures as we can. The film aspect of it is to show other girls and young women all over that this is not only possible, but an incredible things for women and girls to do. If you watch our first film "Ripple," we believe you will see the outstanding impact this trip made on not only our young women, but the instructors, guides, and chaperones who helped make it happen. This project directly ties to Hestia's mission statement because our who goal is to tell these girls "yes you can!" We provide them with a healthy outlet and educate them with sports and activities they can do the rest of their lives.

How will you evaluate or measure your success:

Our success is evaluated and measured by the reactions of the girls and positive feedback we received after. Once our first story was out there we could not have been more proud of our group of girls and grateful that we were able to provide them with this opportunity. Their parents and teachers also praised the trip and it's success. The girls also begged us for a "round two" as soon as we got done with the first. Our success is based on the passion these young females have developed for the outdoors. We hope that this grant money can allow us to provide them with another unforgettable trip and a new skill set.
