Project Description:
We will host our annual Kids Camp on Beaver Island. The summer months on Beaver Island tend to turn towards adult tourism activity revenue streams. To offset the imbalance for our youth, the Beaver Island Historical Society offers an affordable 1-week day camp for both island children and seasonal resident children. The camp tuition covers about 65% of the actual cost per child and the rest of the funds are solicited through grants and community fundraising.
The camp offers the children an opportunity to reconnect with fellow class mates and meet other children who also live on Beaver island in the Summer and empowers female camp leadership.
Daily themes are related to our mission to preserve and SHARE the unique history of Beaver Island and the Archipelago. Such natural history, Native American cultures, maritime activities or storytelling with a visit from PowerBook Bags. Each day a nutritional lunch and snacks are provided. Funding will be used to offset camp expenses.
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
60
What percentage are female?
64
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
The Camp will host on average 30 girls + 8 female counselors and a female coordinator.
Programming this year will be planned with attention to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion themed programs that explore learning about female leaders. For example, a day of programing will focus on Keewaydinoquay Peschel, a Native American Professor and Medicine woman who lived in the Beaver Island Archipelago.
The camp will nurture young girls creativity through arts, crafts, storytelling and play. One special guest will be Paleo Joe who will explore a dinosaur theme through Michigan archaeology.
Assuring the camp rates are below average weekly daycare cost or with a scholarship ensures local girls will have an opportunity to attend camp. By including snacks and lunch it helps to lessen the burden for some families experiencing food insecurity.
We encourage young female adults to assume a leadership position through coordination and execution. This year we are anticipating young leaders from the YAK council to assume leadership of the camp with one young woman to be the special liaison between the Historical Society and Camp.
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
The camp is open to all island children and grandchildren of islanders first and remaining slots are open to seasonal resident children. We do offer scholarships based on individual need.
Last year we implemented 5 scholarships (10% of total children). To qualify, the parent just needs to contact the Executive Director and let her know the child's name. We are such a small community we know all of our families and do not require proof of income. Of the 5 scholarships awarded a few anonymous donors step forward and help to pay some of the tuition.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
We hope to achieve a memorable camp experience that is 2-fold:
1.) Young Girls:- fun, educational and managed well to provide: an enriching safe space for young girls to enjoy humanities themed programming.
2). Young Female Leadership: empowering young women to accept leadership opportunities that help them explore career options in Early Childhood Development and gain confidence in their decision making abilities.
The camp shall ensure all females have the same opportunities and treated equally as their male campers or counselors.
The mission of the Hestia Women’s Giving Circle is to promote economic self-sufficiency and well being for women and girls. Our camp objective aligns with the Hestia mission through thoughtful engagement with young female leadership and programming that embeds principals of diversity, equity and inclusion.
The experiences leaders and participants enjoy are intended to :
1). Uplift women and girls and empower them to feel good about themselves
2). Treat others in their family and community with kindness and to share new found knowledge about their Island community, friends through a humanities themed lens reflecting on women's history, natural history, and local history.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
We are mindful at all times to monitor the camper happiness scale as well as be present for parent/guardian feedback.
Officially, we send out a survey asking for feedback about the camper experience. The survey is included in the registration packet so the family can comment at the end of each day and it is turned in at the end of the week.
We will meet individually with all staff for evaluations. We anticipate hiring 10 counselors, and 5 presenters. We have already identified a coordinator and will work closely with the coordinator to ensure a successful camp operation.
Managing the budget for food, supplies and a staffing ratio of 5 campers per counselor.
We also feel a good measurement of satisfaction/success is when we have the same families enroll their children each year!
