Project Description:
Established in the mid-1990s with the original school facilities, the HLCS softball field is on an area with very poor soil where grass has a hard time growing. There is no fan seating. There are no dugouts because the backstop is right on the property line. The only fencing we have is temporary softball fencing and low-set timbers along the busy road.
Our softball program is our most under-funded team in the scope of our athletics, and is one of 2 female-only sports programs (volleyball being the other). Our field is in desperate need of improvements including permanent fencing and backstop, dugouts, infield maintenance (diamond dust, grass/turf rehabilitation, etc), fan seating, installation of power source, installation of a well, and a sprinkler system. An award from Hestia would give us a much-needed start to this ambitious project and generate momentum toward its completion.
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
500
What percentage are female?
80
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
The people affected by these renovations will be the female athletes in our Swordsmen softball program, the athletes in the Harbor Springs Little League program and local baseball/softball travel teams who use our field, the coaches and families (which obviously include dads and male coaches), and our fans from the community! Softball is such an empowering sport for girls, and Harbor Light desires to improve the quality of experience at our field so that community members enjoy their time making memories at our facility.
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
We have an open team, meaning girls interested in being on the HLCS softball team sign up on a sheet outside the Athletics Director's office. The financial commitment is $90 for the season, but that can be waived in cases of financial hardship.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
Our softball program has dwindled over the last few years but used to be robust. Covid certainly affected that, but also the growing interest in our basketball and volleyball programs. Recently, HLCS built an addition to the existing school facility including 2 new basketball/volleyball courts. Our baseball field was updated 10 years ago, but our softball field has remained the same scrappy patch of land since the mid-1990s. With a new field, we would be able to not only serve our own girls, but girls from all around our region at camps, games, and trainings, as well as local Little League/travel teams and adult ball clubs for practices if needed. We see Harbor Light Swordsmen Softball Field being a central location in Emmet County for female ball players of all ages, religions, and socio-economic backgrounds to train and play on a quality field. While our first focus would be to use the field to train HLCS girls to be determined and skilled athletes, we will continue to invite local ball clubs to use it when it is available. We love to see connections being built to spur athletes on to great achievements. Having a good experience in softball teaches young girls life skills like resilience, hard work, and perseverance.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
Our success in this project will be evaluated by the completion of these renovations and improvements and the hosting of an inaugural game!
