Project Description:

We offer therapeutic riding lessons to special needs individuals to help them overcome their limitations, feel empowered and achieve a variety of goals. Limitations may be physical, emotional, social, cognitive, and/or behavioral. As we work with students to overcome limitations, we see them build self confidence. Equine therapy allows kids to mature, think, grow and be better citizens.
Students are accepted based on physician, teacher and parent referral/input. Each student has an individual grown plan based on needs with a horsemanship and riding training program set to help them achieve their goals.
This project will allow 4 girls to receive horsemanship and riding lessons in our fall class session.

Goal of the Project

How many people will you reach?

16

What percentage are female?

92

If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?

We offer classes to special needs girls and boys. Usually classes are 50% girls, 50% boys. Class size per session (Spring, Fall) is usually 9-10 students including 2 on the waitlist. We offer two sessions a year so we impact approx. 20 students a year. This funding will provide for four girls to have riding lessons in the fall session.
We assign 3 helpers per student. The helpers are women and men. Typically the program runs with 90% female helpers. Helpers are positively impacted also as assisting in the classes have proven to be very gratifying.

How are recipients identified or selected to receive services?  Is financial need considered?

Acceptance into the program is based on physical, emotional and/or cognitive need. This is based on a doctors referral identifying the student's need. Parents and teachers are involved in the recommendation process also. Financial need is not considered but rather the student's limitations being identified as a match to the benefits of equine therapy.

What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?

The Exceptional Riders program provides equine therapy to special needs individuals. The project will have a direct impact on 4 girls and their 12 helpers.

Our goal is to provide a space where girls can learn, grow and overcome limitations. Equine therapy builds the students confidence and leads to our students becoming productive citizens in the community. In Northern Michigan special needs students often find a limited availability of sports. Skiing seasonally and swimming are the only other alternatives. Equine Therapy is a great alternative for our students.

The helpers that assist the student (primarily women) often find a sense of purpose and wellbeing from assisting in the classes and growth of the students. This projects supports Hestia's mission statement by providing a measure and feeling of accomplishment and self sufficiency in girls.

How will you evaluate or measure your success:

Our certified instructors are PATH trained and follow PATH teaching standards. PATH is the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, a 501 c(3) that develops and teaches equine therapy standards to provide for lifelong student impact. This international organization provides rigorously developed course standards and student improvement rating guides that the Exceptional Riders Program follows and uses to measure success.
