Project Name:
Providing Women and Girls with Essential Sexual and Reproductive Health Care and Education
Project start and end dates:
July 2, 2024
June 28, 2025
Amount Requested:
$
15000
Project Description:
According to the Kaiser Family Foundation’s 2020 Women’s Health Survey, rural women are less likely to have had a recent pap test and less likely to have access to a provider who discussed reproductive health issues with them. This is one of many reasons why women and girls need access to essential sexual and reproductive health care and education at the Petoskey health center.
PPMI will provide breast and cervical cancer screenings; colposcopy; birth control, hormone replacement therapy; mammogram referrals; menopause testing and treatment and midlife education; testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs); PrEP and PEP to prevent HIV for individuals with high risk of exposure, medication abortion, and LGBTQ+ services.
Education programs will provide young people with information about puberty, their bodies, consent, relationships and how to prevent pregnancy and STIs. Sexual health education will be culturally appropriate, trauma-informed, and comprehensive.
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
750
What percentage are female?
100
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
N/A
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
The criteria that will be used to identify recipients will include gender identity, income level and insurance status. Female patients ages 15 – 44 who experience incomes at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level ($22,590 per year for a single person in 2024) will be the primary beneficiaries of this grant. Services will be provided based on the unique need(s) of each female patient.
Education programs for young women will be funded by Hestia based on the total percent of female youth served. Planned Parenthood does not charge a fee for the delivery of our education programs and offers this as a service to schools and community groups and therefore must rely on individual donations and grant support.
Hestia funds are a vital component to ensuring women and girls, especially those who experience low-incomes, in Emmet and Charlevoix counties have access to high-quality reproductive health care at the Petoskey health center and sexual health education.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
Through this program it is our hope to support the bodily autonomy of women and girls through equitable access to sexual and reproductive health care that provides them the freedom, security, and information to make the best decisions for themselves about their sexual and reproductive well-being, free from shame and stigma.
Women and girls who have the information, the services, and the ability to make decisions about their own bodies and lives, are better equipped to chart their own destiny and realize their own potential. And when they do, the benefits to their health, education, income, and safety extend to their community.
Hestia’s mission is met through our program by providing women and girls with essential access to sexual and reproductive health care and education. When these needs are met the result is empowerment, equality, and well-being.
Our program will focus on meeting the needs of women and girls who experience low-incomes, are under/uninsured, and are from the rural communities of Emmet and Charlevoix counties. Medical services will be provided through the Petoskey health center and education programs will be provided through community collaborations and outreach events.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
Our program will be defined as successful when at least 750 women and girls from Emmet and Charlevoix counties receive access to sexual and reproductive health care and education.
This will be measured by our ability to meet the individual needs of each patient at the Petoskey health center. Using our medical records we will track the services provided. Services may include breast and cervical cancer screenings, provision of contraceptives, testing and treatment for STIs/HIV, pregnancy testing and medication abortion. And we will rely on feedback from our patients via our satisfaction surveys and social media.
Our education programs will be successful when participants learn about sexuality and develop the skills necessary to make healthy decisions about their bodies and relationships.
