Project Description:

Petoskey Montessori Children's House (PMCH) is currently a women-led non-profit childcare and elementary school. Our Primary Guide (lead teacher for ages 3-6 years old) has applied and been accepted to the AMI (Association Montessori Internationale) 3-6 Diploma program that will be taught at a satellite location in Traverse City beginning June 2024. This is a well respected curriculum and will help to expand and build upon the knowledge that our guide currently possesses about the Montessori pedagogy.

PMCH fosters an environment that supports continuing education and professional development in our staff. During the 23-24 school year, 6 of our 13 staff members were enrolled in early childhood education classes at NCMC and Lake Superior State University. Unfortunately, the AMI Certification program is outside of our budget, and we are requesting funds to help cover the cost of the $13,000 tuition.

Goal of the Project

How many people will you reach?

1

What percentage are female?

100

If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?

N/A

How are recipients identified or selected to receive services?  Is financial need considered?

PMCH has previously been able to support continuing education and Teach scholarships through standard operating expenses and fundraising, however the tuition costs for the AMI 3-6 Diploma are quite a bit higher than the previous funding requests. PMCH will be contributing to the cost of tuition as part of our regular operating expenses and the Primary Guide will be responsible for a portion of the cost ($13,000), but we are hoping to help offset some of her costs with this grant.

What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?

Beyond furthering the education of our Primary Guide, this certification will offer a much deeper understanding of the Montessori pedagogy, which will enhance the quality of education provided for both the children (boys and girls) in the class. In addition, to teaching the students, the Primary Guide is also tasked with providing guidance to her assistant teachers, so the knowledge she will learn will be shared amongst many of the young women working in our classrooms.

How will you evaluate or measure your success:

The successful completion of the program and the demonstrated ability for the Guide to share what she's learned and provide lessons to the children in her classroom as well as her ability to help guide the assistant teachers in developing their skills in Montessori applications.
