Project Description:

One objective of the Great Start Collaborative (GSC) is to ensure children are born healthy. There is a growing consciousness regarding the need to adopt a harm reduction lens and model for perinatal substance use in Charlevoix & Emmet Counties. The GSC is facilitating conversations among local service providers across various sectors to collaborate on a project with the National Harm Reduction Coalition and the Academy of Pediatric Harm Reduction to revamp a publication titled "Pregnancy & Substance Use: A Harm Reduction Toolkit" and introduce it to our community. To ensure our community is prepared for this shift in approach and perspective, we would like to bring the team from the Academy of Pediatric Harm Reduction to Charlevoix and Emmet Counties to offer two in-person trainings: "What is Perinatal Harm Reduction" and "Understanding the Evidence." Amongst other objectives, the trainings will introduce the framework of perinatal harm reduction and emphasize its necessity.

Goal of the Project

How many people will you reach?

125

What percentage are female?

50

If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?

This project is specifically targeted to meet the needs of females in the perinatal season of life. As such, the primary beneficiaries of this initiative are women and their children. While attendees to the training may or may not be female, their increased awareness, understanding, shift in perspective, and approach will directly benefit women and their children in the perinatal period. This benefit will manifest as adjustments in their care, support, and model of service delivery for women experiencing perinatal substance use disorder.

How are recipients identified or selected to receive services?  Is financial need considered?

The training will be universally accessible to individuals, family and community members, and professionals in health, human services, and associated roles who either work, live in or serve women in the perinatal period of life in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties.

We have been in communication with the following agencies and programs to ensure we are working together to identify the best model and approach and to share these tools, resources, and training opportunities with the broadest lens possible: Community Recovery Alliance, Health Department of Northwest Michigan, Planned Parenthood, Northern Michigan Opioid Recovery Consortium, Regional Perinatal Quality Collaborative, Munson Health Care, local doulas, Northern Michigan Community Action Agency-Early Head Start, Community Health Innovation Regions Substance Use Committee, Harbor Hall, Northern Michigan Harm Reduction Coalition, Northern Michigan Interfaith.. We will continue to build an integrated model and approach to outreach.

What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?

We aim to increase awareness and understanding surrounding perinatal harm reduction and its necessity in our community. Through providing information, tools, and resources, we seek to shift mindsets, approaches, and ultimately improve the well-being of women and children. By reducing the stigma associated with perinatal substance use and establishing supportive systems rooted in harm reduction principles, we hope to alleviate the pressures and barriers preventing pregnant women from accessing care, disclosing their struggles, and receiving evidence-based information to guide their healthcare decisions for themselves and their children.

In doing so, we believe we can empower women to become active decision-makers in their own care, equipped with the knowledge to choose their preferred methods of treatment and potential recovery paths. This approach not only reduces the likelihood of poor health outcomes but also decreases the risk of significant mental health issues. Moreover, by increasing women's resilience, reducing isolation, and enhancing their understanding of child development and needs, we aim to prevent further traumas and hardships for both women and children.

How will you evaluate or measure your success:

Success in this endeavor will primarily be gauged by the reports of improvements in care and support systems from women in the perinatal period. However, given the sensitivity of confidential health and treatment/use information, directly measuring this aspect may be challenging. Therefore, we will rely on several indicators to assess the effectiveness of our efforts.

We will track the number of individuals who attend the trainings, ensuring that we reach a diverse audience. We will assess the breadth of attendees, aiming for representation from various agencies and sectors. Post-training surveys will be conducted to gather feedback from participants, allowing us to evaluate the impact and relevance of the training sessions.
