Project Description:

This grant would provide weekly meals and material supplies for teen moms involved in our Young Lives club program. We currently engage with 5 teen moms, their babies, and a faithful team of 4 mentors and 3 childcare workers. Everyone participates in creative activities and enjoying a meal together. Most program participants say the best part of club is the encouraging and challenging talks they get to participate in together.

Goal of the Project

How many people will you reach?

16

What percentage are female?

87

If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?

There are male babies that accompany their mothers to club, but the program directly serves young mothers. There are periphery female audiences that are also impacted by this grant including mentors, and childcare workers.

How are recipients identified or selected to receive services?  Is financial need considered?

The audience for club are teen moms and their babies in the Petoskey area. Any teen mom (up to age 20 and babies up to age 5) are invited to be part of YoungLives. There are 5 teen moms actively involved in the group. New participants are typically friends for the current moms or referred to us by other community members. Recently, one of our young moms told us that at first she had a picture of what our group what like in her head that made her hesitant to show up. Now that she understands what actually happens in our program and the encouragement she can find there, she is taking a lot of care to inspire the other teen moms she knows to come too.

According to the 2021 Michigan.gov statics, there were 8 babies born to women 15-19 years old (https://vitalstats.michigan.gov/osr/abortion/pregbycoteen.asp). This means that there are likely about 24 teen moms (ages 15-19) in Emmet county. We seek to support all of these moms.

What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?

For teen moms, the pressures of the adolescent years are compounded by the pressures of parenting. The club program offers a consistent space where they are taken care of and can enjoy friendship with other teen moms. It is a touchstone for the young mothers to receive dinner, childcare, and emotional support from mentors. These relationships with both peers and mentors often develop beyond club. Young Life staff and volunteers with relationships to these young moms often visit them in their personal lives and act as a support when tough life events related to partners, family, work, or legality occur. We aim to continue providing a source of stability, hope and support to these women and their babies.

Recently, we had a new mentor join who has been through some of the same challenges as our young moms. One of the young moms said she hadn’t known that other people truly understood the challenges of what she has been going through. The young mom initiated further contact with the mentor and now they meet one on one outside of our group.

How will you evaluate or measure your success:

-Consistency in attendance of young moms already involved
-Growth in the number of young moms involved
-Character and life development of young moms engaged with the program
