Project Description:
The Manna Food Project’s mission is to provide access to nutritious food and other resources for anyone facing food insecurity. Not only do we strive to provide the best food possible, but we also want to connect people to other resources in our local community. Food is one piece of the puzzle, people facing food insecurity are financially falling short and in need of other household essentials. The Manna Food Project would like to offer emergency packages for women and children. The emergency packages would include food, diapers, gas cards, hygiene products and menstrual kits. At Manna, we serve many single mothers who are struggling to make ends meet and cannot afford these necessities. For most people in a crisis, seeking emergency food assistance is the fastest and easiest way to address an immediate need. Manna would like to be prepared to better serve these individuals, opposed to sending families to multiple locations to gather some of these items.
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
100
What percentage are female?
80
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
Research from the USDA shows that women are adversely affected by food insecurity and its health consequences. Food insecure mothers are far more likely to suffer from chronic health issues as they often sacrifice their own nutrition to support their children. Manna’s emergency packages will alleviate some of this burden felt by women. If we can provide nutritious food and other essentials, women are able to use their own money to best provide for themselves and their family. When people need assistance in multiple areas such as housing, childcare, food, gas, and utility assistance, they are easily frustrated with layers of obstacles. Manna would like to be able to distribute emergency packages and help alleviate anxiety as women navigate through that difficult situation.
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
Manna currently assists all people seeking food assistance and we often encounter single mothers and women who are already struggling to make ends meet. We have direct access to women in our community who would greatly benefit from these emergency packages. Secondly, we would like to be able to offer these emergency packages to women referred to us from other organizations. Manna continues to work with other community organizations to help provide as many resources as possible to those in need. Partnerships are key to empowering our community members to become self-sustainable. Manna does not require any form of financial qualifications. Anyone that asks for help will receive assistance.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
Manna strives to provide hope and support to people that are in need throughout our service area. Our mission, as well as Hestia’s mission, is to help people in need and we do our best to empower people to become self-sufficient. The emergency kits are meant to fill a void for those that are suffering. Those facing food insecurity are more likely to experience stress, anxiety, and depression. The program will help lessen the burden and reduce the anxiety surrounding the need for household essentials. The emergency kits can offer a small opportunity for women to get what they need to make it through a hard time, while they navigate through the system of other resources. Sometimes it only takes one life event to put people in debt and not have enough money to put food on the table or pay their bills. Manna hopes to be a resource for the women in our community to utilize in times of emergency.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
Manna will have an introductory intake process to evaluate the person’s needs. Our goal is to alleviate the burden women feel in times of need and to minimize the mental and physical health issues associated food insecurity. We will survey those that utilize the program to understand if the program was successful in alleviating stress and anxiety. Manna will track the demographics and the number of people who participate in the program.
