Project Description:
I would like to order a supply of RedDrop kits for the elementary and middle school students. These are kits that include age appropriate size pads and hygiene wipes. This way each tween has these supplies in the event that they start their period at school. This is a functional product free of bleach, fragrances, alcohol or chemicals of any kind. This product also states that the materials have a "guarantee long-term absorption for school and is beautifully and individually packaged."
Catch.org offers evidenced based education and whole child approach, wellness programs. There are 2 programs Alanson Public Schools would like to use; Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Journeys for K-12 and Substance Misuse curriculum.
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
254
What percentage are female?
46
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
I believe this curriculum, SEL Journeys K-12 will provide the education to support the knowledge and growth of our children with social emotional learning. This program allows us to begin having these conversations earlier (from Kindergarten up) about the importance of caring for your mental health, healthy relationships, kindness, acceptance/antibully behaviors and how to manage big feelings. We also want to education about consent in an age appropriate way that is aimed to help keep girls safe as they grow into young women. We do this by educating both boys and girls. There is an add on course called Substance Misuse and at this time in the world, we all know this need to educate our youth early for prevention is critical! Also, included in these programs is education for physical and nutritional health as well.
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
I believe the addition of implementing the Catch curriculum's shared above, could also prove to be a benefit beyond just the students in the building. This education would flow into the community as well because we would have the ability to share the content with parents as well! The reality is that this school district serves a very rural and poverty stricken area with very limited resources and access. Teaching our children to properly care for their physical and mental health provides them the facts and empowers them to utilize these tools for making healthier life long habits.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
By purchasing the RedDrop kits we will be able to provide young girls in elementary and middle school the correct size of feminine hygiene products. These products are not widely available to this young age group, that are in fact experiencing the onset of menses at a much younger age. Increasing access to the feminine hygiene products they need while also decreasing the potential for work interruption for the parents/guardians. The goal is to make this natural transition for our younger female students a little less embarrassing/concerning. While also providing them the products that they need to be comfortable while in school.
Supporting the Catch curriculum implementation would help our student body as a whole and the community by providing early wellness practices. Decreasing behavioral issues in the classroom benefits everyone and allows for an improved learning environment. Substance Misuse program provides the students with the facts and by starting the conversation earlier. The goal would be to see less substance use in the schools and the community.
I believe both of these projects align with the Hestia Mission statement. Both projects support the wellbeing of girls, women as well as the Whole Child student body.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
We will evaluate the purchase of RedDrop by providing a short survey along with each kit to gauge the impact of the kit for each young girl.
Catch curriculum is evidenced based educational programs. There are pre and post tests imbedding in the curriculum to measure the learning and impact for each segment. The program boosts a 3 year beyond lessons impact of reported improvements in behavioral occurrences. The evidence shows that combining movement, learning and music is part of what sets this program above others. The data proves the positive impact of using these programs in schools throughout the U.S. and Canada! Not just during it's current school year of lessons, but for years beyond!!
