Project Description:
Dress For Chill currently provides new winter outerwear for Boyne City Elementary, Head Start and preschool children. 2024 marks the program's 16th year. The project began after we learned that some children were being held inside during recess because they did not have outerwear. In 2023 we dressed 203 children and the numbers will be even higher this year.
This grant request would expand the program to eighth grade girls who will be selected based on need by the Boyne City Middle School counseling office. In partnership with Boyne Country Sports, the selected group will have the opportunity to shop and choose their outerwear at Boyne Mountain who is extending a 40 percent discount if the grants is awarded. We are targeting eighth grade girls as most have hit puberty and in terms of fit the coat life should extend beyond the 2024 winter season. The outerwear selection will be followed by a donated pizza lunch. Transportation will be provided by Charlevoix County Transit.

How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
Having the opportunity to choose their own outerwear will give these young ladies independence and the ability to show their personal style. In many cases the target group receives hand me downs or shop at resale stores to meet their clothing needs. This will be an experience where they can choose something that meets their personal need. The lunch portion will allow the group to create friendships and share in fellowship.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
The group will asked to complete a written impact survey on how the experience benefited them personally and from a family standpoint and how the program could be enhanced or improved.
