CTAC School of Ballet Artist in Residence Program – Choreography Mentoring Week
Project start and end dates:
August 26, 2024
September 1, 2024
Amount Requested:
$
4000
Project Description:
CTAC School of Ballet seeks funds to support a one week artist-in-residence (AIR) with University of Michigan dance professor emeritus, Peter Sparling.
Sparling has held an AIR with the CTAC School of Ballet for the past three years, his choreography being featured in our Fall for Dance and Nutcracker performances. This summer, Sparling will return to mentor our students in their own choreographic pursuits as they work towards creating work for Fall for Dance 2024.
Through our pre-professional program, the students receive mentorship towards many aspects of their dance career including technique, pedagogy, and screendance. Our annual performance featuring student choreographed works, Fall for Dance, has required a limited amount of time and resources for choreographic mentorship due to the fast turnaround of the show. Sparling’s residency will allow our students to receive direct mentorship on their choreographic works for this Fall for Dance and their future choreographic endeavor
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
25
What percentage are female?
98
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
While the School of Ballet offers instruction to both girls and boys, by nature, the audience for the ballet program is primarily girls ages 4 to 18. In fact, in a typical year, it is necessary to recruit two to four male dancers to train alongside female dancers and fulfill roles in productions.
The AIR with Sparling will provide CTAC School of Ballet students a unique opportunity to develop themselves as choreographers, learning not only what it means to create quality work for the stage but how to work professionally with their peers. While females tend to outnumber the males in many dance companies, the resources for women to be a headlining choreographer are much fewer than those for men. According to Dance Data Project, of the full-length dance premieres that were commissioned by the 50 largest ballet companies between 2018-2023, only 18% were choreographed by women. By working directly under Sparling’s mentorship, our female students will realize the importance of their choreographic voice and be given resources that can launch them into a career for choreography.
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
Our pre-professional dancers will complete a thorough application process, detailing intentions for their choreographic work. Sparling and the School of Ballet Artistic Director will then select student choreographers who will be selected for this opportunity. In an effort to create an accessible and affordable program, CTAC offers half price tuition for each class beyond the first class each semester to all School of Ballet students. CTAC also offers $50,000 annually in needs and merit based scholarships across our programs, including up to 95% tuition assistance for dance instruction. Approximately 40% of our dance students receive tuition assistance and all pre-professional dancers receive financial support for summer programs. Of the dancers receiving tuition assistance, more than half have an adjusted household income of less than $30,000.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
Artist-in-residence programming provides dancers with a taste of a professional career in dance. Receiving mentorship from dance luminaries is essential for maximizing the potential of young dancers and choreographers, and broadens access to diverse arts experiences for our community. Through this exposure, students will attain a greater understanding of potential career paths in dance and the arts, increased opportunity in the workforce, and a developed appreciation for this quickly growing artform. Most significantly, the AIR will provide these young women with a tremendous head start on this aspect of their career, as most students typically won’t receive such choreographic guidance until college. The AIR will promote economic self-sufficiency and well being for women and girls by giving them unparalleled access to a renowned choreographer and confidence to explore this career opportunity further.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
The success of the program will be measured by:
-Program enrollment and tuition revenue.
-Program engagement through viewership/ticket sales.
-Student and viewer feedback.
-Student outcomes, including acceptance into collegiate-level dance programs and professional companies.
