Project Description:

Since 2016, we have provided food for Emmet County disadvantaged youth at our school-based youth pantries. In 2023 we reached 42% of the 950 Emmet County youth who deal with hunger. 13,250 visits for the total year, providing $162,000 worth of food while being a 100% volunteer-run organization. It is time for us to begin to "Feed the Whole Child," whether they are poor or not. We will open a FREE after-school and out-of-school youth program for ALL middle and high school students. Our core program will be the DISCOVER YOU and SPARK curriculum to mentor and teach girls and boys to embrace their future with courage, confidence, a growth mindset, and a positive connection with peers and adults. We will have two middle school sessions and two high school weekly sessions for ten weeks. There will be 15 students in each weekly session. Our 2024-2025 School Year strategic impact is to focus on 8th - 11th graders and have 100 students enrolled, with 60% or higher being girls.

Goal of the Project

How many people will you reach?

60

What percentage are female?

50

If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?

The expenses of both genders are the same. Thus, Hestia's grant money will be designated for girls only expenses.

How are recipients identified or selected to receive services?  Is financial need considered?

Flyers will be given to our Youth Pantries students two weeks before the flyers go out to all other students. We have a list of parents and email addresses from our previous AIM Tutoring, SPARK Mentoring workshop, and Camp Daggett Spring Break registrants. The flyers will be on all Emmet County schools' websites and be promoted through daily ads on 96.3 radio. During the 2024 Spring Break, we collaborated with Camp Daggett to have a three-day SPRING BREAK ADVENTURE at Camp Daggett. Twenty-nine middle and high school students participated in each of the three days! Amazingly, the students did not know that 50% of them were Youth Pantry students. They mingled with each other, helped each other, and cheered each other while they were climbing the wall or climbing the ropes. They were all just kids having a great Spring Break experience. The Dinner To Go is essential for our disadvantaged students to know they will have dinner afterward. All students will be given a Dinner To Go.

What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?

Research indicates that as early as middle school, girls are forming their own self-perceptions, and either their strengths or weaknesses become the most prevalent belief they have of themselves. This is especially significant for economically disadvantaged girls, like our youth pantry girls, who often lack exposure to diverse experiences that could broaden their horizons and shape their aspirations.
A few years ago, during the end of COVID-19 lockdowns, we had our small group mentoring program using the SPARK curriculum; the group of six girls were more like a ten-year-old rather than fourteen. They did grow during the 15 weeks. But, I was so in awe when one of them addressed the Rotary Club as a prominent graduating senior a few years ago, explaining to the crowd she had no clue what she wanted to do as a Freshman but had been accepted into architecture. I went and congratulated her, and she reminded me that SPARK made her believe in herself and think out of the box!

Our comprehensive approach includes using the SPARK and Discover YOU curricula and exercises. With these tools, we aim to instill in our girls a strong sense of confidence in their abilities to dream big!

How will you evaluate or measure your success:

Pre-survey and post-survey surveys will be taken. We will sit down with each registrant to get to know each student individually. We will do the same interview at the end of the fifteen weeks. During our graduation party with parents, we will share short videos of small groups or individuals sharing what this small group mentoring/coaching experience helped them to learn about themselves with confidence, strength, love, and pride in being who they are and having a positive mindset rather than a closed mindset in who they are becoming.
