Project Description:

This grant will allow us to purchase a variety of infant carriers to gift our clients who attend a breastfeeding class at our agency. Carriers are used as a tool to encourage parents to nurture their infants’ biological needs while fostering a close attachment. The class will include instructions regarding the carriers and support for assistance once the infant has arrived. The funding would provide carriers and print/digital materials to promote classes. We will also be applying for funding from the Otsego County Community Foundation to support reaching additional families.

Goal of the Project

How many people will you reach?

100

What percentage are female?

100

If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?

NA

How are recipients identified or selected to receive services?  Is financial need considered?

Most of the clients we serve are enrolled in the WIC program, which is income based. The area we cover is over 70% rural, which presents a unique set of barriers for clients. Through both WIC and the Maternal Infant Health Program, our agency provides a wide spectrum of resources and support. Financial needs are always considered and bridging the gaps that exist is one of the top priorities in public health.

What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?

Through this grant we will bolster higher levels of self-efficacy and confidence in women and girls, specifically mothers. Research and evidence demonstrate that baby wearing has a positive impact on breastfeeding rates and duration along with creating a strong attachment between mother and child. Studies have shown time and time again that breastfeeding provides lifelong health benefits to both mom and baby. The health benefits of breastfeeding can also be seen at an economic level; breastfeeding reduces workplace absenteeism and healthcare costs, which subsequently increases productivity.

How will you evaluate or measure your success:

Clients receive a client satisfaction survey; this brief survey asks questions regarding the support they received AND includes a section to provide feedback on the infant carrier they received. We will also evaluate through the numbers of attendees at our breastfeeding classes.
