Empowering Women and their Children at MIHP in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties
Project start and end dates:

Amount Requested:

4000
Project Description:
Every month during a home visit from the MIHP home-visiting nurse, in addition to the normal MIHP routine, the mom will receive and learn how to use PoWeR! Language materials (books, language promoting play materials, developmental information and suggestions, with additional age-appropriate writing materials for siblings) to supplement and enrich her interactions with her child/ren. The mom will select a book for her baby each month and assist the baby's siblings to also each select a book. All of the children (baby included) will receive a PoWeR! Language Bag once a year which contains age appropriate materials that promote the interaction and bonding between the mom and her child/ren, while also building language, motor, literacy, and social-emotional skills. The visiting nurse will share pertinent information, provide demonstrations, and give feedback with the materials to help the mother experience success and greater early relational health & literacy with her baby and children!
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
380
What percentage are female?
70
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
By its very nature, the Maternal Infant Health Program at the health departments in Emmet and Charlevoix Counties support women and their young children. This program will support the moms receiving materials to improve their interactions with their children in the program, ages prenatal through 12 months, plus siblings up to age 6.
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
Yes, financial need is determined by the health department according to federal guidelines. The MIHP (Maternal Infant Health Program) is for women who are Medicaid Eligible in the state of Michigan. Each month (or more) a visiting nurse from the local health department visits the mother and her baby. MIHP starts during prenatal development and continues through at least the first 12 months. Depending on circumstances, the mother and baby may stay on the program through 18 or 24 months. With PoWeR! Book Bags, every mother enrolled in MIHP in Emmet and Charlevoix Counties will receive the materials for the mom to use with her baby along with additional materials for every child in the home up to age 6 (and older if interested).
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
This project was created to increase the Early Relational Health (ERH) -- the bonding and attachment -- between the mother and her baby because good ERH is crucial for the life success for BOTH the mom and her children. When moms have positive interactions with their children, both their mental & physical health for LIFE increases! AND when children, particularly in the first five years of life, experience better early relational health, not only do they have better physical and mental health throughout their lives, but they do better in every aspect of development - socially, emotionally, physically, mentally, & intellectually for life. In addition, the more positive early interactions that children experience, the better their brains will be wired for future interactions with others in society. Adding more books & language materials into the homes of low income children also invites more opportunities for greater language growth & development, linked to positive life outcomes (better education, post graduation learning, positive relationships with others, and economically self sufficient as adults). Moms experience greater well-being as they help their children succeed & become healthy, independent, contributing society members.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
We will continue to monitor the numbers of language & literacy materials going into homes. We will continue to communicate with our partners in MIHP at the county health departments. We will also continue to record the mother's reactions along with their children's and the positive additions in family routines (such as bedtime reading routines). We will also happily collect pictures that share the story!
