Project Description:
The Public Schools of Petoskey therapy dog pilot program began in 2019, with Poppy, a goldendoodle, who works at Petoskey High School. Our program grew when Henry, a labradoodle, was approved to join Lincoln Elementary School. At the beginning of the 2024 school year, Auggie and Bodie joined the program and are now essential members of Central Elementary and Sheridan Elementary. After observing the benefits the dogs brought to the schools, it did not take long for the district to set the goal of having a therapy dog in every Petoskey school.
This left us with two openings to complete the Petoskey Pack, one at Ottawa Elementary and one at Petoskey Middle School. During the summer of 2024, Ace and Hutch, yellow labs, from the same litter came home with two Petoskey families. Ace and Hutch are labradors who are currently being trained. We are seeking support from grants to fund the training of the next two dogs and provide this benefit to all students in the district.
