Project Description:

Community Recovery Alliance (CRA) will offer 30 mutual support recovery group meetings and 15 peer recovery coaching sessions specifically for women, non-binary, and/or perinatal people that honor their unique experiences and strengths in a supportive, inclusive environment, led by women Certified Peer Recovery Coaches with their own lived experience.
CRA is a Recovery Community Organization and Center based in Petoskey, serving Northern Michigan. We host weekday multiple pathway recovery meetings to help compliment the existing 12-step tradition meeting in our community, including a women’s recovery group, which had previously been funded through a grant that was cancelled in April of 2025. This grant will allow us to redesign our women’s meeting with a new time and format and will allow us to run the meetings until further funding is secured. Meetings will use an evidence-based program called Seeking Safety, which focuses on the intersection of trauma and substance use disorders.

Goal of the Project

How many people will you reach?

65

What percentage are female?

96

If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?

We are saying 96% female because some of our programs will be open to nonbinary and transgender individuals. Therefore, depending on reporting requirements, we will expect a couple of individuals to attend these groups that might not identify as “female”. Please note that our co-ed noon meetings will not be included in this grant.

How are recipients identified or selected to receive services?  Is financial need considered?

All CRA services are no-cost and open to everyone; no identification or selection is required. We believe in reducing as many barriers to recovery as possible- therefore, we will work with anyone that comes in and there is no formal intake process required.
Determining location, time, and hybrid/in-person format of the meeting (and therefore selecting the target audience), will be decided by talking to our communities to gauge interest from the Charlevoix and/or Petoskey communities. (Travel is included to allow either possibility). We have identified that there is a need for more multiple pathway options in Charlevoix area and are reaching out to gauge community interest in a women’s group.
Should inappropriate people try to attend a women’s meetings, we have procedures to talk to the individual to find out if a women’s meeting is the right place for them – and encourage them to either speak with a coach individually instead or come to another meeting.

What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?

We hope to help more women find and sustain recovery. By hosting women-only recovery support groups, we hope to help participants create their own safe, empowering space where women can share openly without fear of judgment or traumatization. We hope to help create a space to address gender-specific issues like trauma, caregiving roles, and societal pressures, fostering deeper connection and healing with other women, as we share the hope and power of recovery. In alignment with Hestia’s mission, women in recovery are building their well-being every day and becoming more self-sufficient in the process as they learn new skills to live a self-directed life. Gender-specific groups honor women’s unique experiences and strengths in a supportive, inclusive environment. The coaching support provides extra help in those areas of self-sufficiency such as help with employment, getting a driver’s license reinstated, and walking beside them as they navigate systems to find housing, health care, and more.

How will you evaluate or measure your success:

We will track attendance at all meetings and coaching sessions. They will be entered into our data tracking systems. We also look for “Magic Moments” when recoverees find their own successes in recovery and share anecdotal information when it is available. Because Recovery is not a straight line, and because everyone’s recovery journey is unique, we do not evaluate the success of programs based on length of time of abstinence or time in recovery. Instead, we count them showing up, working on their recovery, and supporting each other as measures of success.
