Project Description:

Harbor Hall’s Women’s Residential Substance Use Treatment Program in Petoskey, Michigan, is committed to providing a therapeutic, trauma-informed environment that supports healing, recovery, and dignity. Currently, our female group therapy room—an essential space for building community, processing trauma, and fostering personal growth—lacks even the most basic furnishings. This absence stands in stark contrast to the safety, stability, and structure we strive to instill in the lives of the women we serve.
With this grant, Harbor Hall seeks to furnish our group therapy space with durable, safe, and welcoming furniture. This includes seating that supports group cohesion, tables for therapeutic activities, and calming design elements that create a supportive atmosphere. These improvements are not cosmetic—they are therapeutic tools that contribute directly to better treatment outcomes by fostering a sense of community, safety, and self-respect.

Harbor Hall’s Women’s Residential Substance Use Treatment Program ensures timely, individualized care through an accessible and respectful admissions process. From the first referral or inquiry, trained intake staff conduct pre-screenings to gather essential clinical and medical information. Comprehensive assessments—conducted in person or virtually—evaluate substance use severity, co-occurring disorders, trauma history, and readiness for change. Harbor Hall coordinates with Medicaid, block grants, tribal health programs, and private insurance to secure funding, and works with uninsured clients to find alternative options when available. Once approved, clients receive clear guidance on what to bring and what to expect. Upon arrival, they complete an in-person orientation, review program policies, tour the facility, and meet their assigned therapist. Individualized treatment plans begin within the first 72 hours. Every step of our process is trauma-informed, culturally sensitive, and de

What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?

Harbor Hall seeks to enhance the therapeutic environment of our Women’s Residential Substance Use Treatment Program in Petoskey, MI, by furnishing our currently bare group therapy room. This space is central to treatment—where women participate in therapy, build trust, and develop recovery skills. Without appropriate chairs, tables, or calming elements, the room feels cold and uninviting, undermining the safety and dignity we strive to provide.

With Hestia’s support, we will create a warm, trauma-informed space using comfortable seating, activity tables, and soothing lighting to foster healing. Many clients come from unstable or traumatic backgrounds; entering a safe, thoughtfully designed space reinforces their worth and supports recovery.

This project also reflects our equitable, trauma-informed admissions process. We assist all women—regardless of insurance or income—through compassionate screening, assessment, and funding coordination. By improving our environment and ensuring accessible care, we offer hope, dignity, and opportunity to every woman we serve, advancing Hestia’s mission of equity and empowerment.

How will you evaluate or measure your success:

Success will be measured through client feedback and treatment outcomes. Pre- and post-implementation surveys will assess perceptions of comfort, safety, and engagement. Therapists will provide feedback on group participation and emotional regulation. We’ll track treatment completion rates and retention to gauge the space’s impact on long-term recovery. Additionally, client testimonials will offer insights into how the improved environment fosters dignity and connection. Overall, success will be defined by increased engagement, client satisfaction, and better treatment outcomes.
