Project Description:
The Scouting America, Michigan Crossroads Council is dedicated to the development of young people in Charlevoix and Emmet by providing comprehensive Scouting programs that focus on character building, leadership, citizenship, and personal fitness. By encouraging diversity through flexible and inclusive activities and programming, our Council provides youth educational experiences which create responsible, productive, and engaged citizens and leaders., We aim to empower youth to become responsible, productive, and engaged citizens.
The Scouting America, Michigan Crossroads Council requests $2,500 to help make Scouting accessible for female youth in Charlevoix and Emmet counties through a special assistance fund, removing barriers to participating by reducing the cost of membership enrollment and summer camp registration by at least 50% per youth. Our goal is to grow the number of female Scouts participating in our Scouting units.
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
150
What percentage are female?
12
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
Hestia funds will be tracked by our Director of Development and District Executive to ensure they are only applied towards the goal of serving female Scouts in Charlevoix and Emmet counties. We will engage the support of our local unit leaders, including the Scoutmaster of Troop 15-G, an all female Scouts BSA troop in Charlevoix, to identify financial aid needs of Scouts enrolled in that unit, as well as the unit leaders of our local Cub Scouts who serve boys and girls. Funds provided would be used to help lower the costs of participating in Scouting by reducing the membership fees and camp registration costs for female participants.
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
Providing financial assistance through membership aid and camp scholarships ensures that financial hardship does not exclude any child from these developmental opportunities. These programs directly address financial barriers, making Scouting accessible to all. Recipients of aid are identified through a request process where families share information including individual fundraising efforts, a statement of need, and family income. That information is used to prioritize scholarship amounts, with the goal of ensuring every youth who requests assistance receives assistance, and those with the greatest need receive greater support. Additionally, our District Executive will work with local unit leaders to identify families who may not be willing or able to submit requests, and provide alternative means to receive aid.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
The special assistance programs of the Scouting America, Michigan Crossroads Council provide essential benefits to local youth, ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent youth from accessing the enriching experiences of Scouting. By promoting inclusivity, personal development, academic readiness, community engagement, and health, these programs contribute to the holistic development of young individuals and the well-being of their families and communities. We hope to achieve growth in the number of female participants in our programs so that more young women are experiencing the benefits that our programs are proven to offer.
Key benefits to girls participating in our programs include:
- Work force development curriculum to introduce youth to various career opportunities, education paths, and resume and interview preparation.
- Advancement program of merit badges and awards that help youth develop an excitement for learning, translating to academic success.
- A network of positive peer and adult relationships that act as a "social protection unit", giving youth a safe space to be their authentic selves while trying out new skills and activities.
- Leadership skills development and application opportunities
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
Success will be measured by the growth in the number of female participants enrolled in Scouting in Charlevoix and Emmet counties, as well as the number of membership registration aid and camp scholarships we are able to provide. We will evaluate the effectiveness of our programs through advancement records, impact surveys, testimonials, and unit leader feedback.
