Project Description:
Raven Hill is excited to launch a new program. THE ARTIST WITHIN is a hands-on arts education program designed to offer women a creative escape from life’s demands. Hosted at Raven Hill, the program invites participants to explore their creativity, experience the scientific principles behind various art processes and better understand the historical role of women in art. Participants connect with their own creative juices, while deepening their understanding of how art, science, and history are powerfully intertwined. THE ARTIST WITHIN will encourage local women to access the creative spark that is within them in a supportive setting. THE ARTIST WITHIN program is built on the belief that artistic creativity is not a luxury, but a tool for self-expression, well-being and resilience. Through 6 guided workshops, a total of 60 participants will celebrate learning by doing, emphasizing process over perfection. No prior art experience is required.

THE ARTIST WITHIN is for women of any background who seek a safe space to connect with their own creativity, regardless of financial need, skill level or prior experience. The program is for those who often put their own interests on hold due to life’s responsibilities & who are ready to discover the joy of crafting something for themselves. Women who may benefit include caregivers; those in the sandwich generation; healthcare workers & service providers experiencing burnout; and women in transition, like those retiring, changing careers or experiencing grief. Raven Hill will reach out to organizations like Women’s Resource Center of Northern Michigan, North Country Community Mental Health, caregiver and senior support services to recruit participants. Creative souls, curious learners & artists-at-heart will also be invited. THE ARTIST WITHIN offers a welcoming & enriching environment to engage the imagination, build confidence & craft meaning by connecting science, history & art.

How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
The Hestia Circle of Giving promotes economic self-sufficiency and well-being for women and girls, understanding that true economic self-sufficiency depends on a woman’s own well-being. THE ARTIST WITHIN is a pilot program supporting the Circle of Giving’s mission by offering small groups of Charlevoix & Emmet County women a safe space at Raven Hill to learn, create, and reconnect with their sense of self. By fostering creativity and well-being, the program helps lay the groundwork for long-term personal and economic self-sufficiency.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
The success of THE ARTIST WITHIN pilot program will be evaluated through participant reflections, facilitator observations, and creative outcomes—maybe even a small art exhibition of the works produced! Early indicators and research suggest that there is a strong impact on participants’ confidence and emotional well-being, when engaging in the creative process. These reflections and observations will guide the program’s expansion and refinement for future sessions.
