Project Description:

This grant will directly fund community event stipends of $500 each for 8 women residents coming to Good Hart in the next year. Please see our website for profiles of the upcoming artists: https://goodhartartistresidency.org/upcoming-residents/

The Good Hart Artist Residency (GHAR) supports artists, writers, and composers from around the world for 10-21 day residencies in Good Hart. During their stay, each resident is asked to provide a free arts event that engages the Northern Michigan community. Each resident receives a $500 stipend in recognition of their time and effort in hosting free community arts events and sharing their creative work.

Between June 2025 and June 2026, GHAR will host 15 residents, 12 of whom are women (80%). These professional artists are highly skilled and from diverse backgrounds. Their community events will provide unique arts programming including public readings, art workshops, open studios, art nature walks, and workshops with local public schools.

Goal of the Project

How many people will you reach?

1073

What percentage are female?

70

If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?

The $4,000 in Hestia funds will directly go to female artists, writers and composers we are hosting in the coming year in the form of community event stipends. Each woman resident receiving a stipend will lead a community arts event that will engage local women and girls. Based on past attendance data, approximately 70% of our public event participants are women and girls. These female-led community engagement events are free to attend, and provide opportunities for cultural exchange between the artists and our community, and educational opportunities for all who participate. These events are structured to support creative skill-building, and provide inspiration to community members. In events at local public schools, both male and female participants will experience women in leadership roles working as professional artists, writers and composers. Young women may be inspired by these role models to find greater value for the arts in their lives, and recognize opportunities to pursue the arts professionally.

How are recipients identified or selected to receive services?  Is financial need considered?

Artists, writers, and composers hosted by GHAR are selected through a highly competitive application and jury review process. Residents are selected based on the merit of their work, their community engagement proposal, and their intent for use of their time during the residency. These world-class artists are committed to sharing their creative talents in meaningful and engaging ways with the local community. During our last open call we received 529 applications for 12 open residency opportunities.

Working alongside the artists and community partners, our staff organizes and facilitates community engagement events that directly benefit our community. These events are presented at no cost to community members, which removes financial barriers for participation. All selected residents have demonstrated clear, actionable plans for impactful community engagement during their residency.

What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?

We will achieve equitable compensation for women artists, and these artists then provide excellent, zero cost, community events. The following are examples of the confirmed events by female artists in the coming months. Indigenous author Rebecca Nagel will participate in the Harbor Springs Festival of the Book. Argentinian composer Martina Liviero will provide a guitar performance at the Emmet County Friendship Center. Artist Ciel Skål will provide an ink drop painting workshop and nature hike at the Thorne Swift Nature Preserve for two local area high schools. Writer Cori McKenzie will provide a full day of writing workshops at Pellston High School. The diversity of audiences for the events demonstrates the broad reach of our programs to women of many ages.

This project brings professional artists, writers and composers into the community, providing examples of women who have developed self-sufficient careers. The arts add to the health and well-being of a community, as an outlet for creative expression. Community participants, particularly women and girls, will benefit through direct interactions with artists, with access to creative and educational experiences they might not otherwise encounter in Northern Michigan.

How will you evaluate or measure your success:

Success will be measured by attendance at each community event and by observing and talking with participants about their experiences at the events. We also gather feedback from residents and partnering nonprofit organizations through a survey using a google form. Evaluation data from these sources will guide future programming improvements. The success of our program in supporting women artists can also be measured in the application percentages of female artists applying to the program. Information on the supportive nature of the Good Hart Artist Residency has spread by word of mouth, and we continue to receive an increase in applications with nearly 70% of applicants identifying as women.
