Project Description:

Sexual health education has historically faced a lot of stigma, often leading to a communal silence. Yet at Planned Parenthood of Michigan, we are proud to be the primary provider of comprehensive sexual health education in Emmet and Charlevoix counties.

We will continue leading education, outreach, and training programs with a focus on meeting the needs of women and girls who experience low-incomes, are under/uninsured, and are from the rural communities.

This will be accomplished through our outreach activities where we distribute hygiene and period product kits. We will work with our community partners and local schools to provide sex education trainings related to puberty, menopause, sexual health, and relationships to help them better serve their clients. Finally, we will present our “The Askable Adult” toolkit to parents, which will contain resources to help them feel more comfortable talking with their kids about sexual health.

Goal of the Project

How many people will you reach?

2650

What percentage are female?

50

If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?

PPMI will track and record the number of women and girls reached.

Education programs for young women will be funded by Hestia based on the total percent of females served.

How are recipients identified or selected to receive services?  Is financial need considered?

PPMI has existing relationships with many local school districts in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties, and those schools rely on PPMI to provide in school sex education each year, and to support teachers and parents with the training and resources they need to both support young people and to be informed themselves. PPMI also sits on numerous community coalitions/collaborative groups that serve/support under-resourced communities, including women and girls, which helps us identify where our education services are most needed.

PPMI provides many education programs free of charge with support from grant and donor funds, and requests fee for services provided when organizations have capacity to pay for them.

Finally, PPMI also attends outreach events like Project Connect that support under-resourced populations in Charlevoix and Emmet counties by providing sexual health information and free resources such as safer sex supplies or menstrual products.

What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?

We will serve as a trusted and valued community health partner in Emmet and Charlevoix counties for women and girls and the organizations that serve them.

Providing women and girls with access to sexual health education, information, and resources, strengthens their ability to develop a safe and positive view of sexuality, build healthy relationships, and make informed, and positive choices about their sexuality and sexual health.

Often when women and girls do not have access to hygiene and period products, they miss school or work. This can impact their ability to succeed in school and it can impact job attendance and earning potential. Providing access to hygiene and period products removes financial barriers to these items. And through sex education, women and girls learn how to access preventative sexual and reproductive health care services.

This program supports Hestia’s mission by equipping women and girls with the information they need to ensure their lifelong sexual health and well-being. Hundreds of studies have shown that well-designed and well-implemented sex education can reduce risk behavior and support positive sexual health outcomes such as reducing pregnancy and STI rates.

How will you evaluate or measure your success:

We will measure our success based on our ability to reach 1,325 women and girls through our partnerships with the local schools in Charlevoix, East Jordan, Lakeview, and Alanson and, we will track the number of community education and training programs with our community partners such as the Community Recovery Alliance, Great Start Collaborative, Women’s Resource Center, Delicate Doulas, North Central Michigan College, MSU Extension, the local Health Departments, the Human Services Collaborative Body, Camp Michigania, Community Action Agency, Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa, and Rock Your Rainbows.
We will record the number of hygiene and period kits we distribute, and we will rely on feedback from program participants when appropriate.
