Project Description:
The membership of Boyne Eta Nu Charities is driving a returning program at Boyne City Middle School that allowed 10 eighth grade girls selected by the Boyne City Middle School counseling team of Julie Sisson and Libby Pearson the opportunity to shop for new winter outerwear at Boyne Country Sports at Boyne Mountain.
In late October, the girls shop at Boyne Country Sports at Boyne Mountain where Boyne USA sells the outerwear at a 50 percent discount. After making their cold weather gear decisions, the group heads to BC Pizza in Boyne City where they enjoy the buffet provided at no cost to the group by Obie Wicker and his talented team.
We are asking Hestia Women’s Giving Circle to fund this portion of the program at $2,000 along with $1,500 to support the counseling department's additional outerwear needs that outfit about 60 female students throughout the middle school.
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
70
What percentage are female?
100
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
These funds support only females at Boyne City Middle School
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
For the shopping event, the counselors at Boyne City Middle School select the recipients based on financial need and standing in the school from a leadership and academic perspective.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
Having the opportunity to choose their own outerwear gives these young ladies independence and the ability to show their personal style. In many cases the target group receives hand me downs or shop at resale stores to meet their clothing needs. At the 2024 shopping event many participants didn't know how to choose their own items and said, I can't afford to be here.
This is an experience where they choose something that meets their personal style and need. The lunch portion is so fun and we see the kids sit together and talk about the day and experience creating new friendships. The feedback from one mom was, "She came home gushing about her day and all I could think was I don't have a job and didn't know how I was going to get her a winter coat this year."
The in-school extension offers the counseling department the ability to react to immediate needs of girls they note have a need and those that bring a need to them directly.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
The group is asked to complete a written impact survey on how the experience benefited them personally and from a family standpoint and how the program can be enhanced or improved.
