4000

Project Description:

We would like to update the women's bathroom at the Bergmann Center. This renovation would include installing new bathroom stalls, a brief-changing station, and a new sink and countertop. The Bergmann Center sustained significant damage during the recent ice storm, including flooding with sewage. As a result, the lower 2 ft of the bathroom walls had to be removed, and the existing bathroom stalls were taken out to allow access to the damaged drywall. While insurance will cover the cost of repairing the walls, it will not cover the replacement of the bathroom stalls, as they are metal and can be sanitized. However, the current stalls are outdated and not always functioning properly.
In the fall, we will begin accepting individuals who require a higher level of medical care. Some of these individuals will need assistance with hygiene, including brief changes throughout the day. To support their dignity and well-being, we need to purchase a dedicated brief changing table/station.

Goal of the Project

How many people will you reach?

24

What percentage are female?

100

If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?

The Bergmann Center does serve both males and females. We are looking at using this grant specifically to remodel the woman's bathroom.

How are recipients identified or selected to receive services?  Is financial need considered?

Recipients are identified and referred through the local Community Mental Health agency. To qualify for services at the Bergmann Center, individuals must obtain a referral from this agency. Participants are adults with mental and/or physical disabilities. Financial need is not a criterion for eligibility or selection.

What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?

We hope to create a calm, clean, and dignified space for the women we serve—a restroom that makes them feel respected, safe, and cared for. Change can be especially difficult for individuals who rely on routine and structure. We want to support them by offering a comfortable and welcoming environment—something they deserve in every part of their daily lives, including access to proper bathroom facilities, once we get back to the Center.

A newly renovated bathroom will help women feel proud of their surroundings and more at ease in their daily routines. By addressing a basic but essential need, we aim to remove barriers to participation and well-being.

This project directly supports Hestia's mission to promote the economic self-sufficiency and well-being of women and girls. First, it ensures a clean, safe, and accessible space that upholds dignity and comfort—key components for building confidence and independence. Second, access to adequate hygiene facilities enables women to fully engage in programming, employment, and educational opportunities without disruption or discomfort. Finally, addressing physical and emotional needs through improved infrastructure supports overall well-being, helping women thrive in the long term.

How will you evaluate or measure your success:

We would consider this project a success based on direct feedback from the women who use the restrooms. Additionally, we would look for signs of improved hygiene and increased confidence among the women we serve at the Bergmann Center.
