Project Description:
Grant funds will support a camp cook and fresh food for the 2026 Beaver Island Kids Camp, held July 20–25, 2026, in Charlevoix County on Beaver Island. The program will provide healthy, freshly prepared lunches for 50 children and 10 staff, helping ensure all participants can fully engage in the camp experience.
Funding from the Hestia Circle will offset the cost of hiring a cook and purchasing ingredients for nutritious meals prepared on site, budgeted at $21.66 per child or counselor per day. If funded, this grant will reduce the organization’s cost burden by $6.67 per person per day, helping keep the program accessible for families.
The week-long camp offers hands-on learning about Beaver Island’s cultural, maritime, and environmental heritage. Led by female leadership and approximately ten counselors, most of whom are young women, the program provides mentorship and leadership opportunities for girls while ensuring campers are well nourished and ready to learn.
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
60
What percentage are female?
50
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
Kids Camp serves both boys and girls, Hestia funding will directly support the wellbeing, participation, and leadership development of girls and young women involved in the program.
50% or more of the 50 campers are girls, ensuring that young girls in Charlevoix County have equal access to a safe, enriching summer program that supports learning, confidence-building, and social development. Healthy lunches prepared on site will ensure that girls participating in the program are well nourished and able to fully engage in daily activities.
The camp operates under female leadership and is supported by ten counselors and female executive leadership, 9 out of 10 counselors are young women gaining valuable leadership, mentorship, and workforce experience while guiding younger participants through camp activities.
By supporting the camp environment and daily operations, Hestia funds help sustain a program that supports both the immediate wellbeing of girls and the leadership development of young women serving as mentors and role models.
The number of people reached only accounts for children, its important to recognize, camp also benefits Mothers - creating opportunities for providing new summer activities for kids
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
Participants in the Beaver Island Kids Camp are identified through open community registration promoted through local schools, community organizations, and public announcements across Beaver Island and Charlevoix County. Enrollment is available to children in the designated camp age group until the program reaches its capacity of 50 participants.
Because Beaver Island is a small and geographically isolated community, the Historical Society works to ensure the program remains accessible to all families who wish to participate. Financial need is considered when setting tuition rates, and the Society strives to keep participation costs as low as possible through grants, community support, and organizational funding. Reducing program costs through outside funding helps ensure that no child is excluded due to financial barriers, allowing families of varying economic backgrounds to participate.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
This project will help ensure that girls in Charlevoix County have access to a healthy, supportive summer learning experience through the Beaver Island Kids Camp. By providing fresh, nutritious lunches during the camp week, the program supports children’s wellbeing, focus, and ability to fully participate in activities that build confidence, curiosity, and teamwork.
For girls attending camp, the program fosters self-confidence, creativity, and engagement with learning outside the classroom. The camp also creates leadership opportunities for young women. It operates under female leadership and is supported by approximately ten counselors, most of whom are young women gaining mentorship and workforce experience while guiding younger participants.
By supporting girls’ participation and the development of emerging female leaders, this project advances Hestia’s mission to promote the wellbeing and long-term success of women and girls in Emmet and Charlevoix counties.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
Success will be measured through participation, program completion, and feedback from campers, counselors, and families. The Beaver Island Kids Camp consistently reaches full capacity of 50 children, and maintaining strong enrollment will indicate continued community need and accessibility.
We will also evaluate the quality and consistency of healthy lunches provided during the camp week, ensuring campers receive nutritious meals that support their ability to participate fully in daily activities.
Informal feedback from campers, parents, and counselors, including the young women serving as mentors, will help assess whether the program supports a positive learning environment and provides meaningful leadership experience.
