Project Description:
Fresh Start Grocery Support provides immediate, essential assistance to women entering Joppa House Ministries’ residential recovery program. Many arrive with limited resources and struggle to meet basic needs during early sobriety. Nutritious food is one of the most urgent supports we can offer.
We are requesting $1,500 to purchase 15 grocery cards valued at $100 each. These cards will be given to women upon entry, ensuring they can buy essential groceries for themselves (and their children, if applicable) during a critical transition period. By reducing the stress of food insecurity, residents are better able to focus on stabilization, healing, and full engagement in their recovery.
This project reinforces dignity, autonomy, and family stability—core values of Joppa House—and helps women begin their journey toward long‑term recovery and independence.
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
15
What percentage are female?
100
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
NA
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
Recipients are identified through Joppa House Ministries' intake and assessment process. All women entering the residential recovery program are eligible to receive support, as the grocery cards are intended to meet immediate, essential needs during the transition into early sobriety. Financial need is inherently considered, as nearly all incoming residents arrive with limited income, unstable housing, and significant barriers to providing basic necessities for themselves (and their children, if applicable). Staff review each woman's circumstances at intake to ensure resources are distributed equitably and according to need. This approach ensures that support is provided to those experiencing the greatest financial vulnerability during the critical first phase of recovery.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
The goal of Fresh Start Grocery Support is to ensure that every woman entering Joppa House begins her recovery with stability, dignity, and the ability to meet her family’s most basic needs. By providing grocery cards at intake, we remove the immediate stress of food insecurity—a barrier that often prevents women from fully engaging in early sobriety.
This support makes a meaningful difference in the lives of women and their children by ensuring access to nutritious food, strengthening family stability, and reinforcing each woman’s sense of autonomy during a vulnerable transition. When basic needs are met, residents can focus on healing, participating in programming, and rebuilding healthy routines for themselves and their children.
This project directly aligns with Hestia’s mission by empowering women, promoting self‑sufficiency, and supporting families as they work toward long‑term stability. Fresh Start Grocery Support provides practical, immediate help that uplifts women and creates a foundation for lasting change.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
Success will be measured by tracking the number of women who receive grocery cards at intake and documenting how this support reduces immediate food insecurity during their first weeks in the program. Staff will record distribution, gather resident feedback, and monitor early engagement in programming, noting whether basic‑needs support improves stabilization and participation. We will also assess overall family stability as women begin building healthy routines supported by reliable access to nutritious food.
