Project Description:
We are the partner with Dollywood Foundation for Charlevoix County for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. For all children who are registered from birth to age 5, in Charlevoix County, will receive an age-appropriate book at their home free to the family. This program was originally started with Char-Em United Way, and was transferred to United Way of NW Michigan, it was no longer supported here. Kiwanis of Charlevoix picked it up and we serve on an average of 550 to 560 kids each month. We have had about 250 kids graduate already from this program.

If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
The cost of the program monthly is approximately $1300.00, about $15,600 per year. The funds would be used to pay for the 48% of the girls, and any new children that we get registered that are female.
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
We started with our Postmus Maternity Basket at Munson Healthcare, Charlevoix Hospital. This basket is received by every mom that gives birth at Charlevoix Hospital. It includes books, baby items like onesies, and more, and a registration for Dolly Parton Imagination Library. Any child in Charlevoix County between the age of 0 and 5 are eligible, and once registered will receive the service.....there is no financial need requirements, and we believe, as does Dolly, that all children need to have the books at this young age to help them be successful when they are ready to start their school journey.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
We at Kiwanis are about children, and Literacy is very important. We want our community children to be able to be ready for their school journey. Our young girls will spend time with family reading, give them a step up for a successful school journey, and become confident in their school years and beyond. Reading helps in so many ways, and we need to make sure that we are able to help them with a great start. We also believe that there is not a greater role model today than Dolly Parton who started this program, with all of her philanthropy, and her giving ways. As women, we all want what is best for our children, and our girls to grow to be good, confident young woman that are able to say.....Yes, I can do that!
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
Recent research has found that just after 10 books children in the DPIL program are at least 4 times more likely to demonstrate stronger literacy skills, such as vocabulary and phonological awareness, compared to children that are not in the program. Also, children enrolled were 9 times more likely to be read to 4 or more days per week compared to children not enrolled. We watch the reading levels, we work with the schools, and we actually see some of the benefit while we are at the school, working with the younger kids. There is an excitement again about reading, and their comprehension skills are improving. Reading to children from birth also gives families time together, which is also so important these days when families are so busy.
