Project Description:
The PPMI Patient Care Fund is designed to ensure that women and girls in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties will have a fair and just opportunity to care for their bodies and attain the highest quality of life possible, on their own terms.
This will be accomplished by providing at least 60 females ages 15 – 44 who need financial assistance for their care, with access to sexual and reproductive health care at our Virtual Health Center. Services will include access to medication abortion for those 18 or older, birth control (pills, patches, ring, or Depo-Provera self-injection), emergency contraception, PrEP a medication to help prevent HIV, gender- affirming hormone therapy, and treatment for the following: urinary tract infections, bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections, exposure to chlamydia, gonorrhea or trichomonas, and herpes simplex.
Since April 1, 2025, PPMI provided care to 90 patients from Charlevoix County and 128 patients from Emmet County for a total of 218 people served.
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
60
What percentage are female?
100
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
NA
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
The criteria that will be used to identify recipients will include gender, income level and insurance status. Patients who experience incomes below 201 percent of the federal poverty level ($31,920 for a single person) and who are uninsured/underinsured or unable to use their insurance for our services will be the primary recipient of the PPMI Patient Care Fund. Services are provided based on the unique needs of each patient.
To verify funds are used for patients from Charlevoix and Emmet Counties, we rely on the patient’s registration information that is provided when they schedule an appointment through the Virtual health center. This allows PPMI to identify the city/county of the patient.
Support from Hestia is critical now that our patients can no longer use Medicaid to pay for the services they receive at Planned Parenthood or rely on Title X to subsidize the coast of their care because of the Trump administration’s changes to the laws regarding these federal programs.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
The PPMI Patient Care Fund will remove the financial barriers to sexual and reproductive health care for women and girls. Care will be provided via the Virtual Health Center, allowing women and girls to access care when they need it in a setting that is convenient for them. This is especially important for women and girls who live in rural areas who also face transportation barriers and limited provider access. PPMI’s Virtual Health Center is open 7 days a week including early mornings and evenings.
Removing the barriers to sexual and reproductive health care are essential to women's lives and futures. Women's health, economic security, equity, and dignity are closely tied to their ability to plan whether and when to have children, pursue an education or a career. Women and girls will benefit from having access to treatment for sexually transmitted infections that if left untreated could lead to infertility, long term pelvic pain, and increased risk for HIV. And they will benefit from having timely access to abortion medication care. The benefits of having access to sexual and reproductive health care supports the economic self-sufficiency and well being of women and girls which supports Hestia’s mission.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
Success will be defined by providing care to at least 60 women and girls from Charlevoix and Emmet counties who need financial assistance through this grant. Planned Parenthood will use its electronic health record management system to track the demographic information of the female patients served such as insurance status, income level, county of residence and type of service provided.
The budget provided is based on serving 200 people from Charlevoix and Emmet Counties.
