Project Description:
Manna is seeking funding to purchase food for the Manna Food Pantry. Since 2021, the number of neighbors seeking assistance at our onsite pantry has increased by 174%, reflecting a significant rise in food insecurity in our community. This includes a staggering 196% increase in children under 18 being served – highlighting a growing demand for food assistance among families with kids in the household.
Asset Limited, Income Constrained, and Employed (better known as ALICE) are working households that earn above the federal poverty level but do not make enough to cover bare necessities like housing, utilities, transportation, childcare, and food, also known as the survival threshold. Among ALICE households, single-female-headed households with children are the most likely to experience hardship with 71% of these households falling below the survival threshold. Nationally, households with children headed by a single female have experienced significantly higher rates of food insecurity.
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
18000
What percentage are female?
50
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
The food pantry serves all people who seek food assistance, we do not offer our program to just females. However, Manna can retroactively assess how many single female-headed households were served. Guests who utilize our food pantry are registered each time they seek assistance. Manna does not collect demographics beyond what is required by the USDA, which includes the total number of people in the household, number of children under 18, number of senior citizens, and number of veterans. By sorting households by females with one adult or one adult with children, Manna will be able to track how many women and how many single-female-headed households are served.
With Manna’s buying power, a grocery order with non-perishable foods, fresh produce, frozen meats, dairy products, bread and baked goods cost $25 on average. Funds from Hestia can directly support the cost of providing groceries to women who use the food pantry.
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
The Manna Food Project does not require any applications or qualifications to receive food. While USDA regulations require us to post their income guidelines, anyone is eligible for emergency food assistance. Neighbors who seek out the charitable food system can self-declare a need for food assistance.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
Food insecurity in Emmet County has increased to 14.9%, and nearly half of food insecure neighbors do not qualify for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Our goal is to alleviate food insecurity for our neighbors in Northern Michigan, so that food is one less worry for the women who are struggling to make ends meet.
Stress, anxiety, and depression are prevalent in food insecure populations. People experiencing food insecurity often only have access to unhealthy, processed foods that are low-cost. These factors contribute to the reality that food insecure people are more likely to suffer from chronic diseases like diabetes, heart diseases, and obesity. The USDA indicates higher rates among households with children headed by single mothers and women living alone, meaning women in these living situations are more likely to experience both mental and physical health issues.
Manna aims to reduce food insecurity and its adverse health effects on women and girls, giving them access to the food and other resources they need to become self-sufficient.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
Manna will measure success of this program by how many households are served at our onsite food pantry, with an emphasis in reporting on women and single-female-headed households being served. In addition, Manna will track overall pounds of food distributed at the pantry, including produce, protein, and dairy products. This helps Manna evaluate the quality of the food being distributed, as we aim to have at least 30% of the food we give out be fresh, healthy options.
