Project Description:
Boyne Falls Public School looks to collaborate with Little Big, Inc. to inspire students in K-8 grades to work outdoors on collaborative projects such as trail clearing, nature walks, plant identification, and respect for the environment. Little Big will provide the programming for outdoor education. We would like to host an event in the Fall, Winter, and Spring of the 2026-2027 school year.
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
165
What percentage are female?
50
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
We will serve both girls and boys by providing opportunities to lead, model, and collaborate with classmates by giving students leadership roles, preparing them for demonstrations, and sharing their learning with younger school mates. The educators from Little Big, Inc. are both female, as well as the staff at school involved in the planning of this program. As a result, the students will see female leadership in action.
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
All students in Kindergarten through eighth grade are invited to participate.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
We hope to inspire our students to spend time outdoors. Learning skills such as foraging, fire-building, trail-clearing, and plant identification could help students build self-esteem and connection to nature. Serving the school by participating in these events will also promote not only school pride, but pride in one’s work. The two Sarahs that run Little Big, Inc. will help inspire students to picture themselves as outdoor educators and small business owners.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
We will evaluate our success by creating a pre-assessment and post-assessment on attitudes and comfort level towards being outside, handling tools, working with peers, and learning about nature.
