Project Description:
We plan to partner with Girls Scouts of Michigan Shore to Shore to conduct a golf program for girls age 8 - 13. This will mirror a similar program that they've had success with in Holland. We are hoping to conduct at least one program in Emmet County and at least one program in Charlevoix County over the next year. We are in the early planning stages to conduct the Emmet County program this summer and will follow suit with either an outdoor program in the fall or an indoor program during the winter in Charlevoix County. The program will consist of two hours of golf programming in which we'll use the golf skills and activities that we teach to bridge to the life skills of Collaborating with Others and/or Building a Positive Self Identity. At First Tee, we use the game of golf to teach important life skills that will empower kids (in this case young girls) face the immediate challenges of growing up as well as challenges they will face as adults.
Goal of the Project
How many people will you reach?
50
What percentage are female?
100
If your program serves both males and females, how will Hestia funds specifically target women and girls?
NA
How are recipients identified or selected to receive services? Is financial need considered?
Recipients will be Girl Scouts in Charlevoix and Emmet Counties. This will serve as a dual opportunity for the girls to earn a Practice with Purpose badge (4th and 5th graders) or a Good Sportsmanship Badge (middle schoolers). Financial need is not a criterion for entry into the program but the reason for this grant is to keep the entry fee low for the girls.
What do you hope to achieve? What difference will this make in the lives of women and girls?
How will this project meet Hestia's mission statement?
We love to collaborate with other organizations that are doing good in our community. A major goal is to create a long-lasting partnership with the Girls Scouts. Another goal is to get some of the girls from this program to sign up for First Tee Programming in the future. We believe our programming will line up nicely to reinforce many of the ideals that the Girl Scouts instill in their participants and thus feel this is a perfect partnership. Our key commitments that we will reinforce in this clinic (Building a Positive Self Identity and Collaborating with Others) go hand in hand with Hestia's mission to promote economic self-sufficiency for women and girls. Golf is a wonderful game to have knowledge of when entering the world of business and that is an advantage to any woman entering the work force on its own. However, when we can teach life lessons inherent with the game of golf, it will provide that much more of a leg up for the young women of our communities.
How will you evaluate or measure your success:
Success first and foremost will be measured based on continued partnership with the Girl Scouts. We will also love to see 10% or more of the girls that we work with sign up for a future First Tee Program.
